As a global union, Wiki Workers United has branches in different countries and regions. Each branch is a local chapter of our union, representing the interests of Wikimedia Foundation staff in that area. Branches work together to support the overall mission of our union while addressing local concerns and organizing efforts.

United Kingdom

The UK branch of Wiki Workers United (WWU-UK) is affiliated with United Tech and Allied Workers (UTAW), a union that represents tech workers in the UK. UTAW is part of the Communication Workers Union (CWU), the main trade union for communication companies in the UK. The branch is currently in the process of being formally recognized by Safeguard Global, the Employer of Record for the Wikimedia Foundation in the UK.

WMF staff based in the UK wishing to be involved in contract negotiations or union activities should join UTAW-CWU.

United States

The US branch of Wiki Workers United (WWU-US/CWA) is affiliated with Communications Workers of America (CWA), the largest communications and media labor union in the United States. WWU-US/CWA won a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election to force the Wikimedia Foundation to recognize the barganing unit after the WMF declined a request for voluntary recognition. The branch will become a part of CWA Local 9415 once the NLRB election challenge window expires on 2026-09-10.

WMF staff based in the US wishing to be involved in contract negotiations or union activites should join WWU-US.

Other Countries

The WWU has folks who will help research the requirements for establishing a local union, work with you to create a new branch, and ultimately seek recognition from the WMF. If it is not reasonably possible to establish a branch in your legal jurisdiction, at large membership will always be available to you and provide ways for you to shape our platform and give and get support from your union siblings.

WMF staff in a country that does not yet have a formal branch can get involved in forming a new branch, shaping our global goals, and other union activites by joining the global WWU solidarity union.
